All classes fill on a first come, first served basis. Class size is limited. Therefore, it is wise to register early. To receive the member rate you must present a membership card active/valid for the entire session. Mail-in registration forms are available at the Business Office. No mail-in registrations will be accepted in person.
Please be aware that our online registration process uses a real time registration system. You will be required to create a user account which will be yours alone before you can register online. It will be used to register you and all other family members listed on your membership. You will access and use this same account to enroll you and your family in each program session. This account can be created at any time whether you are actually registering for classes or not. We recommend that you create your account as soon as possible so that you will not have a delay upon registering for your programs. It may take up to 48 hours between creating your account and receiving your password. Using older browsers, non-compatible browsers or disabling browser features, such as JavaScript, cookies and SSL, will reduce site functionality.
The Melrose YMCA accepts cash, check, Visa, MasterCard, Discover Card, and American Express. Checks returned unpaid to the Melrose YMCA by your financial institution will result in a service charge of $30.00.

Certain classes may be cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances. Although this schedule is accurate for its time period, the information is subject to change without notice. It is the policy of the Melrose Family YMCA to make fee adjustments based on financial need. These adjustments are made based on the availability of funds raised from all sources in our community to provide assistance to those in need. The YMCA does all it can to see that no individual is turned away due to an inability to pay. Preschool Swim Lessons (3-6 years - Prior to 1st Grade)Please consider the following definitions when registering your child for classes so that they will be placed in the appropriate class and be able to progress accordingly. On the first day, returning students will be placed in their correct level. New students will be evaluated and placed in the correct swimming level. For safety reasons, parents must wait outside of the pool area during lessons Preschool OneFor preschoolers who are swimming for the first time or still use "fully inflated bubbles" or "75% inflated/two bubbles". YMCA levels: Pike & Eel.
Preschool TwoFor preschoolers who have taken lessons before or have some formal idea of strokes. These swimmers use only "less than 50% inflated/one bubble" or no bubble. YMCA levels: Ray & Starfish

New Member Introductory Nautilus Instruction As a new member joining the YMCA, you may receive 3-6 appointments (included in your membership fee) to learn the correct usage of the Nautilus machines. For teen information, please refer to the Teen section.
Adult Aerobic Classes A variety of classes from beginner to advanced. Boot Camp, Yoga, Pilates, Zumba, Y Cycle, and Core Conditioning are just a sampling. Pick up the latest schedule, check online or call 781-665-4360. An introductory course of Wudang Tai Chi Chuan and Qigong practice. This unique style of Tai Chi and Qigong, practiced by the Daoist monks at Wudang Mountain, China, is flowing, dynamic, powerful, gentle, and utilizes both the external body and one's inner energy in its practice. Instruction includes learning the Wudang Five Animals Qigong set, basic Tai Chi exercises, and beginning the 28 Movement Wudang Tai Chi Form.
An introductory course in Bai Long Quan Kung Fu, a style that includes elements of Choy Li Fat, Hung Gar, and Okinawan Kempo. Instruction includes learning basic hand strikes and kicking techniques, forms practice, basic self-defense, technique applications, breath and energy control, and conditioning exercises. Classes will include warm ups, stretching, basic exercises, forms and technique practice, conditioning exercises, and cool downs.
Adult Basketball League (Registration required) This league is a great way to get some exercise, meet new friends and bring back those exciting youth basketball memories. Come on down and shoot with us!
Mt. Washington Boot Camp NEW!! This class will consist of workouts used to strengthen the body for the Mt. Washington hike, Cardio training will consist of workouts on the AMT and Eliptical machines. Muscular endurance will be trained through Free Weights and/or Weight Machines. Both workouts will gradually blend into advanced interval training. The workouts will get harder to condition the body for the strenuous hike.
This class is geared towards helping individuals training for a triathlon including swimming, biking, and running. A series of workouts geared towards building a good base for competeing in a triathlon. All levels of athletes welcomed! There will be some coaching on techniques in all three events.

Learn the ins and outs of weight training coupled with a good Ab routine. Weight training will be through the proper use and technique of barbells and dumbbells. The Ab workout will included the medicine ball and floor exercises. Done in a group setting to help encourage and support each other throughout the workouts. Beginner and advanced are both encouraged to attend the class. (No registration required.)
Open Volleyball Drop in for a volleyball game, learn how to play and join the fun! No registration required.
Senior Fitness (Registration required) Supervised one-hour sessions utilizing cardio, Nautilus and Strive equipment.
Twelve (12) visits per month for those who have completed the introductory class and are continuing their exercise program.
Beginner Social Dancing - Foxtrot, Waltz & Swing For the beginner in mind. The three most popular social dances will be taught. Great for weddings and all social
occasions. Registration required.
One or two dances will be taught each session from among Fox Trot, Waltz, Swing, Tango, Rumba, Cha-Cha, Salsa, Merengue, Viennese Waltz and Samba. Registration required.

The emphasis will be on developing confidence, motor skills, body awareness and physical fitness. Curriculum will cover a variety of sports throughout the session including t-ball, kickball, soccer, basketball and dodgeball.
Indoor T-ball (3 to 5 years old) Children will work on basic skills of the game such as throwing, catching and hitting.
Indoor Soccer (3 to 6 years) Children will learn the rules and basic skills of soccer while developing confidence, motor skills and body awareness.
Just Girls (2.5 to 4 years old) Girls will learn a new sport every week. The emphasis will be on developing confidence, motor skills, body awareness and physical fitness. Sports will include soccer, basketball, t-ball, dodgeball, kickball.
Parent/Child Open Gym ( 2-4 years ) NEW!! This is a place for you and your child to play with a variety of sports equipment in a gym setting. Come on down and have some fun!

Ultimate Dodgeball (7 to 10 years) - Held at The Sports Center In this class, children will learn how to play a variety of dodgeball games. It will incorporate teamwork, agility, motor skills and much more.

Parent/Child Yoga ( 2.5 to 5 years old ) A 30-minute class to start enjoying the benefits of yoga with your child. If you have a mat, bring it along. Enjoy a parent/child activity to reinforce the concept of exercise as a healthy way to spend time together.

Parent/Child Soccer (3 to 5 years old) This class is run by an instructor and it involves parent/guardian participation with the child. You will be assisting and helping to make the child successful at the skills they will learn throughout the class.
Family Fitness Time (Main Street Fitness Center) Youths ages 9-13 can come workout at the Main Street Fitness Center from 5:00-8:00 pm on Friday evenings and from 3:00-5:00 pm on Sundays. Must be a member and be accompanied by a parent/guardian. Free to members. |

Preschool Gymnastics Programs |

All gymnastics programs are held at The Gymnastics Center (156B Tremont Street in Melrose), located right next door to the Sports Center. Please note for all gymnastics classes, age is based on the first day of the session. Sorry, no exceptions! It is recommended for gymnasts of all ages to wear a leotard, if possible (sweatpants and tucked in T-shirt are appropriate for boys). All class participants must have bare feet and hair must be pulled back tightly for class. Tiny Tumblers Open Gym ( 18 months - 4 years) Your and your Tiny Tumbler will have supervised, but not structured, time to use our preschool equipment. Space is limited. Babysitting is available for siblings at $3.00/ hour per child. Registration is required. Adult participation is required during class. Safety is our biggest concern, one adult per child. No exceptions!.
Tiny Tumblers ( 18-36 months ) This semi-structured class will allow you and your Tiny Tumbler to use all of our preschool equipment and gymnastics apparatus. Class will begin with basic stretching and movement activities. There will be two featured events per class. Adult participation is required for this class. Safety is our biggest concern, one adult per child. No exceptions~
Rising Stars ( 2 1/2 - 3 years old ) This structured class will introduce your Rising Star to the world of movement and coordination. Preschool equipment as well as our gymnastics apparatus will be used on a weekly basis. Our staff will introduce very basic gymnastics skills, strength and flexibility techniques. NOTE: Child must be able to separate from parent and be willing/able to follow instructions.

Shooting Stars ( 3 & 4 years old ) This structured class will help your Shooting Star continue to learn basic gymnastics. Our preschool equipment and gymnastics apparatus will be used on a weekly basis. Our knowledgeable staff will introduce basic gymnastics skills, strength and flexibility techniques. Note: child must be able to separate from parent and be willing/able to follow instructions.

This class will help prepare your gymnast for our competitive gymnastics team. NOTE: Because instructor recommendation is required, online registration for this class is not available.

Hop, Skip & Read ( 3-5 years old ) - Held at the Melrose YMCA Child Care Center in Stoneham This class rotates weekly between a sports focus on fine/gross motor activities and a literacy-based focus which introduces children to the fun of reading using books and activities which incorporate art, drama and games.
Kid's Karate ( 4-12 years old) Taught by instructors from "Bill Adams Karate," this is an introductory program to Japanese Karate. Class will be divided into age groups of 4-7 years and 8-12 years with an instructor for each group. Program goals are: developing listening skills and refining motor skills with a focus on respect, self-control and ability to work with others. Optional test when ready to progress to next colored belt (level) is $30.

Creative Cooking ( 3-5 years old ) - Held at the Melrose YMCA Child Care Center in Stoneham Children will explore the excitement of cooking while interacting with others and creating activities related to the food they will be making.

Kid's Drama Club ( 6-11 years old) This class will explore the basics of dramatic arts from acting and set design to script writing through a variety of fun and interactive games. The group will work on a play to be performed during the last class of the session (family and friends invited!). Dress rehearsal is the day prior to performance.
"Follow Your Art" Class ( 5-12 years old) Led by a professional art instructor, children will explore a variety of two and three dimensional art media, including drawing with oil and chalk pastels, clay, paint and collage in a non-judgmental environment that focuses on individual expression. Materials are adapted to all ages and ability levels. Children will need to bring an oversized T-shirt/art smock.

New Teen Member Introductory Nautilus Instruction
All teens between the ages of 14-18 must go through the Fitness Center Orientation and receive a certificate upon completion in order to receive a fitness center membership card. This is for safety reasons and to educate our teens on proper technique on the exercise equipment. Students who are 13 years old that take three sessions of Physical Education 101 will be able to receive a workout card that allows them access to the Teen Fitness Center without an adult. Please make your appointment with the Fitness Center staff. Located at the Sports Center, 152 Tremont Street, Melrose and is open every Friday from 7:00-10:00 pm for Middle School students. Qualified staff supervise the Center and coordinate activities. The Center offers billiards, ping pong, stand up arcade games, PS2, Nintendo Wii, board games, a full sized gym for activities like basketball and dodgeball. Physical Education 101 For Teens (9-13 years) The basics of Nautilus and free weights will be taught and the knowledge of which muscle groups are involved with the exercise. The cardiovascular workouts will include learning about the different heart rate zones. They will receive a complete understanding of how the body works during an exercise session. Held at the Sports Center site.

Have a Birthday Party At The Melrose Family YMCAGym Parties Host a party at the Main Street facility gym. Parties include 1 hour of supervised games in the gym and use of the 2nd floor area for cake and presents during the last 1/2 hour. All participants must be at least in Kindergarten. There is a maximum of 20 participants with this party. Online registration is not available for parties. Party times: Saturday 11:00 am - 12:30 pm OR 12:15 pm - 1:45 pm
Gymnastics Parties Host a party at the Gymnastics Center on Tremont Street. Parties include 1 hour of supervised use of the center followed by 1/2 hour in the cake and presents area. All participants must be at least four years of age. There is a maximum of 15 children with this party. Online registration is not available for parties. Party times: Saturday 1:30pam - 3:00 pm (availability may vary due to team meet schedule)
All parties are booked on a first-come, first-served basis and are not available to be booked on-line.
