All classes fill on a first come, first served basis. Class size is limited. Therefore, it is wise to register early. To receive the member rate you must present a membership card active/valid for the entire session. Mail-in registration forms are available at the Business Office. No mail-in registrations will be accepted in person.
Please be aware that our online registration process uses a real time registration system. You will be required to create a user account which will be yours alone before you can register online. It will be used to register you and all other family members listed on your membership. You will access and use this same account to enroll you and your family in each program session. This account can be created at any time whether you are actually registering for classes or not. We recommend that you create your account as soon as possible so that you will not have a delay upon registering for your programs. It may take up to 48 hours between creating your account and receiving your password. Using older browsers, non-compatible browsers or disabling browser features, such as JavaScript, cookies and SSL, will reduce site functionality.
Certain classes may be cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances. Although this schedule is accurate for its time period, the information is subject to change without notice. Please check at the Business Office for the latest information. Business Office information shall supersede any web site information.

REMINDER: The Melrose Family YMCA will be closed for our yearly maintenance from Saturday, August 23rd through Labor Day Monday, September 1st. It is the policy of the Melrose Family YMCA to make fee adjustments based on financial need. These adjustments are made based on the availability of funds raised from all sources in our community to provide assistance to those in need. The YMCA does all it can to see that no individual is turned away due to an inability to pay. New Member Introductory Nautilus Instruction As a new member joining the YMCA, you may receive 3-6 appointments (included in your membership fee) to learn the correct usage of the Nautilus machines. For teen information, please refer to Teen page. Adult Aerobic Classes A variety of classes from beginner to advanced. Pick up the latest schedule, check online or call 781-665-4360. Pilates I (Registration Required) Precise effective movements help you strengthen the connection beyond the mind and body, develop a longer, leaner body and improve athletic performance and build stamina.
Pilates II (Registration Required) A continuation of Pilates I with more challenging poses and sequences added to the workout.
Hatha Yoga (Registration required) This class will cover many poses and stretches. There will also be meditation and visualization components to the class.
Zumba (Registration required) NEW!! This 45 minute program incorporates footwork and body movements from flamenco, salsa and other dances. Participants pump their legs, windmill their arms, gyrate their hips, clap their hands, dip, slide and spin ... a fun way to workout!
Adult Basketball League (Registration required) This league is organized and run by volunteers. Four teams are formed and each team plays one game per night. They officiate their own game with the volunteer there just to keep things fair. No standings are kept and new teams are formed every eight weeks. This league is a great way to get some exercise, meet new friends and bring back those exciting youth basketball memories. Come on down and shoot with us!
Beginner Social Dancing - Foxtrot, Waltz & Swing For the beginner in mind. The three most popular social dances will be taught. Great for weddings and all social
occasions. Registration required.

Physical Education 101 For Adults This is a group class for those who need extra help with their workouts. The class will go over a thorough understanding of cardiovascular workouts. There will be a basic overview of the nautilus and free weight equipment. This class is recommended for those who are unsure or have questions about developing their own personal workout program.
Workouts will consist on the three elements of the race: swimming, biking and running. There will be coaching in all three areas, but the class will be mostly made up of workouts.
This is the new and improved version. The class will consist of exercises and stretches for the back. There will also be corrective techniques for sleeping, lifting and other daily activities to relieve stress on the back.
Open Volleyball No registration required.
Senior Fitness (Registration required)
Twelve (12) visits per month for those who have completed the introductory class and are continuing their exercise program.
One or two dances will be taught each session from among Fox Trot, Waltz, Swing, Tango, Rumba, Cha-Cha, Salsa, Merengue, Viennese Waltz and Samba. Registration required.

The emphasis will be on developing confidence, motor skills, body awareness and physical fitness. Curriculum will cover a variety of sports throughout the session including t-ball, kickball, soccer, basketball and dodgeball.
Indoor Tee-ball (3 to 5 years old) Children will work on basic skills of the game such as throwing, catching and hitting.
Indoor Soccer (3 to 5 years) Children will learn the rules and basic skills of soccer while developing confidence, motor skills and body awareness.
Girls will learn a new sport every week. The emphasis will be on developing confidence, motor skills, body awareness and physical fitness. Sports will include soccer, basketball, t-ball, dodgeball, kickball.
Mini Sports ( 4 & 5 years old) The emphasis will be on developing confidence, motor skills, body awareness and physical fitness. Curriculum will cover a variety of sports throughout the session including t-ball, kickball, soccer, basketball and dodgeball.
Travel Team Basketball ( Grades 5-8 ) A more competitive league for the experienced player. Traveling to other towns is involved. Players must try out for this program. All participants will need to purchase a jersey at an additional cost of $17.00. Registrations will be opening soon.

This class is taught by instructors from "Beyond Self Defense". It is an entry level program which will be geared specifically for ages 5-7. The goal is to develop listening skills, refine motor skills, teach respect for parents and teachers, self control, and the ability to work with other children. (Optional: test when ready to progress to next colored belt - $30.00).

All Sports (8 to 10 years) The emphasis will be on developing confidence, motor skills, body awareness and physical fitness. Curriculum will cover a variety of sports throughout the session including baseball, kickball, soccer, basketball, dodgeball and volleyball.

Parent/Child Yoga ( 2.5 to 5 years old ) A 30-minute class to start enjoying the benefits of yoga with your child. If you have a mat, bring it along. Start Fall off with a parent/child activity to reinforce the concept of exercise as a healthy way to spend time together.

Parent/Child Soccer (3 to 5 years old) This class is run by an instructor and it involves parent/guardian participation with the child. You will be assisting and helping to make the child successful at the skills they will learn throughout the class.
Family Fitness Time (Main Street Fitness Center) Youths ages 9-13 can come workout at the Main Street Fitness Center from 5:00-8:00 pm on Friday evenings and from 3:00-5:00 pm on Sundays. Must be a member and be accompanied by a parent/guardian. Free to members. |

All gymnastics programs are held at The Gymnastics Center (156B Tremont Street in Melrose), located right next door to the Sports Center. Please note for all gymnastics classes, age is based on the first day of the session. Sorry, no exceptions! Tiny Tumblers Open Gym ( 18 months - 4 years) Your and your Tiny Tumbler will have supervised, but not structured, time to use our preschool equipment. Space is limited. Babysitting is available for siblings at $3.00/ hour per child. Registration is required. Adult participation is required during class. To ensure safety & productivity, one adult per child.
Tiny Tumblers ( 18-36 months ) This semi-structured class will allow you and your Tiny Tumbler to use all of our preschool equipment and gymnastics apparatus. Class will begin with basic stretching and movement activities. There will be two featured events per class. Adult participation is required for this class. To ensure safety and productivity, one adult per child.
Rising Stars ( 2 1/2 - 3 years old ) This structured class will introduce your Rising Star to the world of movement and coordination. Preschool equipment as well as our gymnastics apparatus will be used on a weekly basis. Our staff will introduce very basic gymnastics skills, strength and flexibility techniques. NOTE: Child must be able to separate from parent and be willing/able to follow instructions.

Shooting Stars ( 3 & 4 years old ) This structured class will help your Shooting Star continue to learn basic gymnastics. Our preschool equipment and gymnastics apparatus will be used on a weekly basis. Our knowledgeable staff will introduce basic gymnastics skills, strength and flexibility techniques. Note: child must be able to separate from parent and be willing/able to follow instructions.

Advanced Gym Stars I, II & III Instructor recommendation is required. This structured class will take your Gym Star to a higher level of gymnastics. Progression on all four Olympic events will be taught. Body position, strength and flexibility will also be emphasized. Gym Kids will have the opportunity to be challenged and experience success on all types of gymnastics equipment. Basic gymnastics progressions on bars, beam, vault, tumbling and trampoline will be the focus. Body position, strength and flexibility will all be emphasized. Gym Kids 1: (5-8 years old)

Instructor recommendation is required. Prep Team has two 90 minute classes per week. (Saturday class is once a week). This class will help prepare your gymnast for our competitive gymnastics team. NOTE: Because instructor recommendation is required, online registration for this class is not available.
Our competitive team is for gymnasts who have a higher commitment level for the sport. Level 3 is the only non-competitive level in our team program. They focus on the development of skills, flexibility, and strength. Levels 4-9 are competitive levels which are progressive through skill development. Our gymnasts compete in the Eastern Mass. Hop, Skip & Read ( 3-5 years old ) - Held at the Melrose YMCA Child Care Center in Stoneham This class rotates weekly between a sports focus on fine/gross motor activities and a literacy-based focus which introduces children to the fun of reading using books and activities which incorporate art, drama and games.

Creative Cooking ( 3-5 years old ) - Held at the Melrose YMCA Child Care Center in Stoneham Children will explore the excitement of cooking while interacting with others and creating activities related to the food they will be making.

Kid's Karate ( 5-12 years old) This class is taught by instructors from "Beyond Self Defense". This is an introductory program to Japanese Karate form of Shotokan. Children will be divided into age groups of 5-7 years and 8-12 years with an instructor for each group. Program goals are: developing listening skills and refining motor skills with a focus on respect, self-control and ability to work with others. Optional test when ready to progress to next colored belt (level) is $30.00.
This class introduces children to the basics of yoga. Mats are provided. This class is offered Fall II only.

Kid's Drama Club ( 6-11 years old) This class will explore the basics of dramatic arts from acting and set design to script writing through a variety of fun and interactive games. The group will work on a play to be performed during the last class of the session (family and friends invited!). No class held on 11/11. Make up class will be 12/15. This class is offered Fall II only.
French Club I ( 5-8 years old) French Club I introduces French through everyday conversation through songs, weather, calendar and greetings. Additional focus on vocabulary using props, board games, books, etc. No class on 11/27. Make up date is 12/2. This class is offered Fall II only.

New Teen Member Introductory Nautilus Instruction
All teens between the ages of 14-18 must go through the Fitness Center Orientation and receive a certificate upon completion in order to receive a fitness center membership card. This is for safety reasons and to educate our teens on proper technique on the exercise equipment. Students who are 13 years old that take three sessions of Physical Education 101 will be bale to receive a workout card that allows them access to the Teen Fitness Center without an adult. Please make your appointment with the Fitness Center staff. Wicked Yoga For Sports (10-15 years) An athletic style of yoga. The poses are ideal for strengthening and conditioning in football, wrestling, baseball, track & field, etc.
Middle school age students will head to Wachusett Mountain on Fridays after school. You will meet at the YMCA Sports Center and leave promptly at 3:00 pm and return at 10:00 pm. For more information, please contact Kim at 781-662-4543 and leave a message |
Physical Education 101 For Teens (10-17 years) The basics of Nautilus and free weights will be taught and the knowledge of which muscle groups are involved with the exercise. The cardiovascular workouts will include learning about the different heart rate zones. They will receive a complete understanding of how the body works during an exercise session..
Leaders Club is a National YMCA program for grades 8-12 which develops leadership skills while meeting new people & having fun. Activities include weekly meetings, attending cluster and regional events, trips, volunteer work, and community service projects. When planning a gym party, the "cake & presents" room will be used the last half-hour. All participants must be at least in kindergarten. There is a maximum of 20 participants with this party. Gymnastics Parties Have a gymnastics party at the Gymnastics Center at 156B Tremont Street on Saturdays for 1 1/2 hours. When planning a gymnastics party, the "cake & presents" room will be used in the second half hour. All participants must be at least four years of age. There is a maximum of 15 party participants allowed. For more information and party times, please call 781-665-1616. Online registration is not available for parties. Party times: Saturday 1:30pam - 3:00 pm (availability may vary due to team meet schedule)
Pool Splash Parties Splash parties will be booked on Sundays only. Parties include first half hour in the "party" room (2nd floor area) for cake and presents with second part (3:30-4:30) in pool. All participants must be at least six (6) years of age and pass a swim test in order to swim in the deep end. Party must obey all YMCA pool rules and facility rules. Party is responsible for are clean up. At least two (2) adults must remain with party group at all times. There is a maximum of 25 participants with this party.
