MELROSE YMCA PRESIDENT TO RESIGN Richard Whitworth plans to retire after 52-year association with organization MELROSE, MA – June 25, 2009 – The Board of Directors of the Melrose YMCA today said that president and CEO Richard Whitworth has announced plans to retire from the position he has held since 1979. The Board asked that he make his resignation effective Sept. 1, 2009. Citing health reasons, early retirement and a desire to remove himself as the focal point of community concerns following this year's tragic event involving a former coach, Whitworth said it is time for a "healing process" to begin in the community. "Our community will not begin to heal as long as I am in charge of the Melrose YMCA," Whitworth, 58, said in a letter to the Board. "My departing wish is that the Melrose community will view the situation for what it is: an isolated, albeit deplorable, incident in the otherwise magnificent 119-year history of the Melrose YMCA." Whitworth added: "I do not for one moment want to distract the YMCA from its important mission and its vital programs." Whitworth told the board he stands ready to assist in any manner during the transition period. "Whit has really dedicated his life to Melrose and the YMCA," said Board Chairwoman Mary Sexton. "It will be sad to see him go but he retires knowing that his contributions will not be forgotten. The "Y" benefitted greatly from his leadership and we are all grateful for his years of service." Whitworth, a Melrose native, joined the Y in 1957 and worked at its camps during summers from high school and college. After graduating Springfield College with a Bachelor's of Science Degree concentration on YMCA programming, Whitworth was recruited by the Board to serve as YMCA Program Director. He was promoted to president and CEO in 1979 at the age of 29. During his tenure, the Melrose YMCA grew from a $150,000 to a $6 million institution and its membership – which grew from 1,500 to more than 8,000 - was acknowledged to be one of the highest per capita YMCA's in the country. Among Whitworth's accomplishments was the oversight of the Y's $4 million building renovation in 1986, the development of the Youth Sport and Gymnastic Center, and the purchase and development of the $3 million Melrose Y Child Care Center. "I have devoted most of my life to the YMCA because I believe deeply in this organization's mission and in its capacity to strengthen communities by providing children and families with the opportunity to grow and thrive," Whitworth said in his letter. "I am immensely proud that our YMCA has been able to do just this in Melrose." From Richard Whitworth: The past few months have been the most challenging period not only in my 30 years as CEO of the Melrose YMCA, but also in my 35 year career as a YMCA professional. I have devoted most of my life to the YMCA because I believe deeply in this organization's mission and in its capacity to strengthen communities by providing children and families with the opportunity to grow and thrive. I am immensely proud that our YMCA has been able to do just this in Melrose. The alleged despicable acts of one man have pained and angered our community and caused some to question the leadership of our YMCA. Many pointed comments have been directed at me, and though I think this resentment is misplaced, I also understand that our community will not begin to heal as long as I am in charge of the Melrose YMCA. As such, I have resigned my position as CEO. My departing wish is that the Melrose community will view the situation with James Conner for what it is: an isolated, albeit deplorable, incident in the otherwise magnificent 119-year history of the Melrose YMCA. Please do not lose sight of what the YMCA has meant to our community or the great work that our dedicated staff and volunteers continue to do on a daily basis to meet Melrose's most pressing needs. I also urge each of you to support our YMCA in any way you can, whether it be with your time, treasure or goodwill. The Melrose YMCA is of our community and for our community. It always has been and must remain a safe, enriching place for our children and families, and your support makes this possible. In closing, I want to thank the many people who have stood by me during this difficult time. Your encouragement has meant more to me than you'll ever know. I also want to thank those who worked or volunteered at the YMCA during my tenure. It was an honor and a pleasure to be your partner in making a difference in our community.
